The AIA Central Kentucky Chapter is now taking applications for AIA Associate Grants for the year 2013. The Board will also accept applications for the grant of one new AIA Member. This is a continuation of a successful program that gets Architectural Interns and Emerging Professionals active in the Central Kentucky Chapter. For those not familiar with the program, each year the AIA/CKC pays the membership costs for up to ten people to become Associate AIA members. Continuing the invitation from last year, we will consider membership for one licensed architect who has been licensed under 5 years and has never been an AIA member. Grant recipients are expected to be active in the chapter for the year the chapter pays for their membership, then continue their activity in future years and become the next generation of chapter leaders.

AIA Associate grant recipients are asked to serve on one or more of the following committees: Trade Fair, Programs, IDP, Website, House Tour, Continuing Education, Architects in Education, Media and the Habitat for Humanity House.

Additionally ALL grant recipients will be expected to help on the day of the Trade Fair in February and the day of the House Tour in September.

Current or prospective AIA Associate members are eligible. Applications should may be returned by email to 2012 CKC President David Allen, AIA, dallen@coxallen.com by December 31, 2012.

Kevin Sloan, ASLA, M. Arch Lecture
Location: Henry Clay
Time: 6pm (cocktails at 5:30pm)
Date: October 24, 2012

AIA Continuing Education Units = 1 LU

AIA-CKC is excited, collaborating with ASLA KY and UK College of Landscape Architecture, to bring to Louisville Kevin Sloan, ASLA, M.Arch of Kevin Sloan Studio based in Dallas, TX to lecture on October 24 at 6pm at the Henry Clay. Kevin is a register Landscape Architect in Texas and holds a Master of Architecture degree from Syracuse University. His studio is keenly interested in making places and spaces and has coined the concept High Performance Landscapes™. Kevin will be presenting a lecture titled “Parallels” which consists of his studio’s research, exploration, and practice.

Parallels

Through a series of analytical vignettes and built designs, “Parallels” will discuss a decade of exploration, undertaken by Kevin Sloan Studio, into the metropolitan city pattern – its historically unprecedented form, antagonism toward place and space, and ambiguous future. When Kevin Sloan set aside his own personal biases and sensibilities, astonishing facts, analysis and connections began to emerge for a more effective and useful urbanism that considers buildings and landscape as a reciprocal and cohesive fabric.

The presentation is intended to impart objective information to architects and designers for their interpretation and use.

Please mark your calendars and invite your firm to attend this exciting lecture of one of the nation’s leading Landscape Architects whose background goes deep into Architecture theory, study, teaching, and exploration marrying Landscape Architecture with the built environment.

To learn more about Kevin Sloan Studio please visit his firm’s website: www.kevinsloanstudio.com

Preservation Kentucky and the Kentucky Heritage Council are pleased to announce that the 2012 Historic Preservation Conference will be headquartered in Princeton, Kentucky (Caldwell Co) from Thursday, September 20 through Saturday, September 22. The 2012 conference is the first Kentucky Historic Preservation Conference to be held outside a larger metropolitan area, and the first to feature a regional approach.

This year’s theme, “Our Towns: Partnering Regionally, Preserving Locally,” reflects the regional approach to the conference taken by our Western Kentucky Lakes Region partners of Eddyville/Kuttawa, Dawson Springs, and Princeton, as well as the need for all of us to work together to revitalize and maintain our towns and neighborhoods through preservation strategies.

The 2012 conference will feature hands-on training opportunities; educational sessions on revolving loans funds, nonprofit management, planning, and issues related to small towns; as well as meetings of the Kentucky Historic Preservation Review Board, the Kentucky Main Street Program, the Kentucky Heritage Council Board, and the Preservation Kentucky Board. An opening night reception will be held on Thursday, September 20 and preliminary plans are being made for a Historic Preservation Film Festival on Friday, September 21.
