AIA/ CKC, IDP: Engineering Systems

Thursday, June 13, 2013; 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM Urban Design Studio 507 South 3rd Street Louisville, Kentucky 40218

All Architectural Interns and Architects licensed 5-years or less, are invited to attend this IDP Program at the Urban Design Studio. David Proffitt, AIA, of UofL’s University Planning, Design & Construction (UPDC) shall be the guest speaker. This program shall cover: 1. Engineering Systems a. Selecting and specifying structural, mechanical, electrical & other systems & integrating them onto the building design. b. Analyzing and designing basic structural elements and systems c. Coordinate building systems (i.e. structural, mechanical, electrical, fire safety, security, telecommunications/ data) and reconcile system’s conflicts. d. Apply sustainable design principles.

Cost is free to Architectural Interns & Architects licensed less than 5-years. Food and drinks will be served. Thursday, June 27, 2013; 5:30 PM – 7:00 PM Student Recreation Center [Meet at Construction Entrance] 2030 South 4th Street Louisville, Kentucky 40208

All Architectural Interns and Architects licensed 5-years or less, are invited to attend this IDP Program at University of Louisville. David Proffitt, AIA, of UofL’s University Planning, Design & Construction (UPDC) shall be the guest speaker. This site visit shall cover: 1. Site & Building Analysis a. Review site & building analysis progress. 2. Building construction progress. 3. Creating Field Observation Reports: a. AIA Document G711 [Architect’s Field Report] Hard Hats & Work Shoes will be required to visit the site; no tennis or dress shoes will be permitted on the construction site. The IDP Committee announces the tentative schedule of programs fot the rest of 2013.  They are as follows:

  • April – Planning & Zoning      Regulations
  • May – Engineering Systems
  • June – UL Student Recreation      Center, Site Visit #2
  • July – Construction Costs
  • August – Codes & Regulations
  • September – Material Selections      & Specification
  • October – UL Student Recreation      Center, Site Visit #3
  • November – Bidding & Contract      Negotiation
  • December – Construction Phase:      Observation (or General Project Management)

Note: Due to scheduling issues at UDS the April Program will be held the first full week in May; tentatively May 9th.  Look for future announcements and tell any intern you know about these programs.

c. Establish sustainability goals for the project

b. Review geotechnical & hydrological conditions
c. Assess environmental, social & economic conditions related to project.
d. Document & evaluate existing conditions

This year’s IDP Committee is fortunate to have engaged David Proffitt, AIA at UofL’s University Planning, Design & Construction to allow our IDP Programs this year to engage with the new Student Recreation Center at UofL

There will be a number of Programs scheduled this year that will use the Student Recreation Center as the focal point of discussions; we will also schedule site visits to help clarify topics discussed and see the construction in progress.

This 1st Program is on how Architecture firms obtain projects. We will get to understand how the Requests for Proposals for the Student Recreation Center were created, reviewed and awarded.

All Architectural Interns, and Architects licensed 5-years or less, are invited to attend a Job Procurement Program at the Urban Design Studio.

David Proffitt, AIA, of UofL’s University Planning, Design & Construction (UPDC) shall be the guest speaker.

This program shall cover:

1.   How Request For Proposal’s (RFPs) are written
  a.   Describe the process on how RFPs are written
    i.    How Programs are determined
ii.   How criteria is determined for Architectural Firms
2.  How Architecture Firms responded to RFPs
  a.  Review submitted RFPs
i.    Discuss Pros & Cons of different RFPs
3.  How RFPs are reviewed and evaluated

a.  Discuss how RFPs were reviewed, evaluated and awarded.

AIA/ CKC: Building Cost Analysis Program

All Architectural Interns are invited to attend a Building Cost Analysis Program at the
Builders Exchange of Kentucky.

Robert Pass of Robert Pass & Associates shall be the guest speaker.
This program shall cover analyzing and evaluating site and building construction costs
and preparing a building cost analysis that meets the programs requirements.
Cost is free to AIA/ CKC members & Architectural Interns; $5.00 for non-intern/non AIA members.
Food and drinks will be served.
